Chapter 15

Several drinks and dances later, Dane finally remembered where he had seen Maddi before.

“Snickers!” he bellowed with a grin.

“Excuse me?” Maddi asked, nearly choking on her drink.

“That’s where I know you from! You were the girl who couldn’t decide which chocolate bar to buy.” He chuckled. “I knew I’d remember eventually.”

“That was you? That’s a little embarrassing.”

“Why? Because you thought I was a stalker?” he joked. Maddi couldn’t help but giggle.

“All I could hear were these heavy footsteps getting closer and a man yelling out to me! Can you blame me?” She laughed.

“Heavy footsteps? What am I? An elephant?” Dane put on an unconvincing hurt expression.

“You know what I mean!” She giggled again.

“I might have to teach you a lesson!” He leaped up and scooped her into his arms, making her squeal.

“Put me down!”

“I can’t hear you!” He swung her up and into the air, passing her onto one of the other guys there.

She shrieked, as she was thrown from guy-to-guy around the room. This was the most fun she had had in a long time.

Once she was back in Dane’s arms, he placed her gently down on the ground with a huge grin on his face. She playfully swatted his arm.

“I can’t believe you just did that!” she said, pretending to be cross.

“Didn’t you enjoy being thrown around like a rag doll?” he asked, smirking.

She thought about continuing the charade of being upset, but the smile spreading across her face betrayed her. “Actually, it was pretty fun,” she admitted. “I can honestly say I’ve never been thrown around a room before.”

“Glad to entertain you.” He bowed down before her.

“That looked interesting.” Rachel joined them.

“Yeah, you could say that.” Maddi chuckled. “Quite exhilarating actually.”

“You’re very trusting to let a group of drunks throw you about.” She laughed. “I would’ve been afraid they’d drop me.”

Maddi’s jaw dropped. “I didn’t even think about that!” She swatted Dane again.

“Hey! We would never have dropped you!”

“Hmmm.” Maddi pursed her lips. “I’ll let it slide… this time.” She pointed a finger at him. “But only because I’m having so much fun.”

“Good to hear it. Must be time for another dance then.” He grabbed her hand before she could turn him down, pulling her out to the centre of the room. He leaned in to whisper in her ear. “You know what?” he asked.

“What?”

“I think we make a great team.”

“Oh really? What are you basing this on?”

“Well, I helped you with your chocolate buying, we dance well together – even under the influence, and I can throw you around without dropping you.” He winked. Maddi laughed.

“That makes us a good team?” she asked.

“Yep. Think about it. If we can dance this fantastically while drinking, we will be even more amazing when we’re sober,” he said matter-of-factly.

“I have to admit, that’s a pretty good argument. I see a flaw though.”

“What’s that?”

She leaned in, “Maybe we just think we’re dancing fantastically, when in actual fact… we suck.” She tilted her head, brows raised, waiting for his response.

“I cannot believe you just said I suck at dancing,” Dane said in mock outrage.
